Pixel Tablet

Redefining Product Categories Through User Insight

The tablet market had stagnated for years with no meaningful innovation beyond processing power. At Nest, we approached this challenge differently—combining insights from our smart display portfolio with the counterintuitive discovery that 70% of tablets never leave the home. This presented an ambiguous design challenge: how do you enhance utility during a device's idle time?

Strategic Design Thinking

I led the end-to-end UX strategy that transformed this insight into the 2023 Pixel Tablet—a device that functions as both a portable tablet and a smart display when docked. This required coordinating design efforts across Nest, Android, and Assistant teams, each with different constraints and objectives.

Cross-Platform Integration

The project demanded creating cohesive experiences across hardware and software touchpoints, establishing design patterns that worked seamlessly between handheld and docked modes while maintaining each platform's unique strengths.

“The most innovative tablet of 2023.”
